Brooklyn artist Hannah back in Antarctica

imageThis fabulous photo of tabular icebergs came today from our studio artist Hannah Lawson who works as an expedition leader and Zodiac driver on cruises to the polar regions and all sorts of other exotic places.

In between working trips Hannah can be found in her little studio space at Brooklyn making intricate wood engravings of the wildlife she encounters.

Sue Mitchell says: ‘The Exhibition covers a broad spectrum of printing methods and styles and is stimulating and exciting. Brooklyn member Angie Rogers’ two woodcuts are excellent examples of her creative work.
The Gallery itself is well worth a visit,  small but well laid out with much to see and admire.  It  is easily accessible by public transport.’

Artists’ Book Fair in Leeds

If you’ve not been to this before, we can highly recommend it as a stimulating and enjoyable experience with hundreds of beautiful hand-made books to view and handle.  There’s always a wide range of different styles, concepts and lovely printed illustrations to inspire and amaze.

Its normally got a buzzy atmosphere (unlike the impression you might get from this somewhat staid and possibly ironic image from their website) and a cafe for when you need a sit down.

Impression Exhibition – The Gallery, Masham

There’s a definite bird thing going on at Brooklyn just now.  Studio holder Angie Rogers is exhibiting a selection of her bird woodcuts at The Gallery in Masham, North Yorkshire.
The show is called Impression and features the work of 5 women printmakers.  The preview is on Thursday 14th July 7.30 – 9.30 pm and the exhibition runs from 15th July to 15th August.

The Gallery is situated on the market square in the centre of Masham and is well worth a look if you find yourself in the area.  To find out more visit their website at:

Birdfair 2011

Friday 19th – Sunday 21st August 2011

Brooklyn artist Hannah Lawson is collaborating with her colleague Sheila Tilmouth in an exciting new venture.  They are taking a stall in the Art Marquee at Birdfair 2011, the British Birdwatching Fair taking place at Egleton Nature Reserve, Rutland in August.

The bird art of Sheila Tilmouth and Hannah Lawson reflects the contrasting habitats found at latitudes 54° North and 54° South of the equator. Sheila Tilmouth depicts the abundance of birds that visit her exposed moorland garden on the edge of the Pennines whilst Hannah illustrates albatross, penguins and petrels found around the glacier clad sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia.

Printmaking Exhibition – Hot Toddies

Following the frenzy of the Open Studios weekend, its still all go at Brooklyn where we are hosting a selling exhibition by printmaking group Hot Toddies.  The show previewed last night and is now open for the next 3 days 11 am to 4 pm Friday 8th , Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July. There’s a variety of different approaches to printmaking on view so drop in for a look if you’re around Hebden this weekend.

Sue’s latest print

More printmaking from our studio holders, this time the featured artist is Sue Mitchell.

Sue is making a woodcut which forms part of a series of prints that include image and text.

Sue says “I want to develop new skills based on the impromptu and informal sketches I make during my travels round Europe. I find this way of working challenging, exciting and as an extension of my particular style of work which is expressive rather than photographic.”

Here’s a very printmakerly view of Sue with her rack of Pfeil woodcutting tools and a great benchhook with cut-outs for block corners, made by a friend.  In the background you can see Sue’s lovely old cast-iron screw-press.

What our printmakers are working on now

Belated Happy New Year to all our friends and followers.

Late last year we promised a new slot featuring our printmakers at work. First up is Lynda who’s currently making a lino cut of a prominent local character – a dead tree at Mytholmroyd!

Lynda says ‘I pass this tree everyday when I’m coming down the main road and its such a striking image.  The tree stands isolated in the middle of a field and changes colour depending on the light and weather, from stark white in the sun to silvery grey when its wet.  It makes an ideal subject for a relief print.’

Lynda is working on a series of other local scenes so for those who live in the Calder Valley, look out for more of your old friends captured in lino.

Behind The Red Door

Where can you find penguins, owls, and long-tailed tits all together in Hebden Bridge? Step through the red door at Brooklyn Studios to find them in our artistic landscape of woodcut printmaking, abstract painting, hand-made books, photography, ceramic mosaics and much more.

We have a growing number of printmakers now at Brooklyn and many of us love to work with wood, as its such a responsive and tactile material.

‘King Penguins’ woodengraving by Hannah Lawson, ‘Long-tailed Tits’ woodcut by Angie Rogers and ‘Owl’ woodcut by Sarah Halstead.

We will be having regular printmaking features on this site and future posts will show work created by different printmaking processes used by our talented members. So keep an eye out for what will hopefully be an informative and entertaining slot.

Hannah Lawson joins us

Our newest member is artist Hannah Lawson who has moved all of about 50 yards from Northlight Art Studios to join us here at Brooklyn. Hannah is a wildlife illustrator, printmaker and photographer who leads expeditions on a small cruise ship in the polar regions. To learn more about Hannah and her work, follow the link on the right.

Whilst Hannah is heading for South Georgia, a plethora of penguins guard the stairs up to her space!
